Kontra Canto Paula Barembuem

Kontra-Canto

Paula Barembuem (voice) & Christian Wendt (double bass)

A woman’s voice and a double bass are worlds apart. But after many years of playing together with Christian Bakanic’s Trio Infernal, Paula Barembuem and Christian Wendt have tried out this rare combination and discovered their expressive possibilities.

This duo project was prompted by an exciting question: is it possible to tell a story with two instruments that are so far apart? What is indispensable to capture the essence of a song? The style is not relevant. Voice and double bass dare to combine jazz ballads, tangos, pop, rock, Latin American folklore and even songs from the Renaissance. With virtuosity and sensitivity, the duo reveals that a Brazilian samba and the language of Bach really do have a lot in common. Even a vibrant groove, which is usually conceived as an accompaniment, emerges frequently in the foreground and is carried by a melody.

Paula Barembuem and Christian Wendt deliberately provide no ready answers to the original question about the essence of the song. Their music invites the audience to enjoy the open question, trusting that the answer will come by itself.
