Paula Barembuem & Trio Infernal

Paula Barembuem: voice
Christian Bakanic: accordion
Christian Wendt: double bass
Jörg Haberl: drums, backing vocals

For the top-class musicians of Christian Bakanic’s Trio Infernal, it was a matter of breaking new ground from the very beginning. They do not see themselves as border crossers, but as ambassadors between the sound worlds of jazz, tango and modern grooves of the club scene like house and drum’n’bass. This corresponds perfectly with the art of Argentinian singer Paula Barembuem, whose wide range of vocal variations, combined with power and originality, lead her to play with different influences, cultures and styles, so that they merge and become one.

“As free as possible from stylistic restrictions, together we have drawn a flexible musical bow between Latin America and Europe, reflecting our contemporary cultural diversity and expressing hope for a future in which differences become enrichment.”

‘(...) Paula Barembuem and the Trio Infernal dedicated a highly refined portrait to this ‘voice of the voiceless’ (Mercedes Sosa) in the List Halle in Graz. (...) A voice like a whispering torrent that meanders allusively through poetic images. (...) The fusion of pop/rock rhythms into latin, performed by the filigree drummer Jörg Haberl and Christian Wendt on double bass, is perfect ‘world music’. And Bakanic is an inexhaustible reservoir of southern sound finesse. Gracias a la vida!’

‘With these tango songs, the singer presents her visiting card and does not shy away from comparisons. (…) How all four, without ever willfully wanting to do anything else, find their own contemporary interpretation of these classics, most of which are over 60 and 120 years old, with great ease and joy of playing, seems so natural that the focus is completely on the music and lyrics.’
